The Perth community is mobilizing for the upcoming **Relay For Life West Coast 2025**, expecting over **1,000 participants** and **80 teams** to join this annual 24-hour event aimed at honoring loved ones lost to cancer while raising essential funds. The event is scheduled to take place in **2025**, with a fundraising goal of **$300,000**.
Relay For Life West Coast Chair, **Pat Strahan**, emphasized the event’s significance, highlighting that for more than two decades, it has united individuals from diverse backgrounds including families, schools, workplaces, and cancer survivors. “This annual event is a celebration of what is possible when a community comes together with purpose,” Ms. Strahan stated. She expressed gratitude to everyone who has participated in previous events by walking laps, lighting candles, sharing stories, or raising funds.
Significant Impact on Cancer Research
**Ashley Reid**, CEO of **Cancer Council WA**, noted the substantial impact of the funds raised through Relay For Life. “Over the past **25 years**, the Western Australian relay community has raised more than **$25 million**,” he said. This funding has supported vital research, prevention programs, and support services for individuals affected by cancer.
Mr. Reid also mentioned that last financial year, **Cancer Council WA** contributed over **$3.5 million** to local cancer research, emphasizing the importance of community involvement. “Thanks to their generosity, we have been able to unlock better detection, better treatment, and better outcomes for those facing cancer,” he added.
Relay For Life serves not only as a fundraising initiative but also ensures ongoing support for cancer patients. This includes funding for cancer nurses available through the hotline **13 11 20**, who provide assistance and emotional support to those affected by cancer. Additionally, the event plays a crucial role in empowering individuals to reduce their cancer risk through prevention programs.
Community Support and Participation
The commitment and dedication of participants, volunteers, and committee members are vital to the success of Relay For Life. “None of this would be possible without the dedication of our Relay participants, committees, and communities, who give their time, energy, and hearts to ensure no one in WA faces cancer alone,” Mr. Reid stated.
The City of **Joondalup** has also extended its support for the event, allowing the community to host this significant gathering. The collaboration between local authorities and community members reflects the collective effort to combat cancer and support those affected by it.
As participants prepare for the **2025** event, the spirit of unity and determination remains strong, underscoring the belief that together, communities can make a meaningful impact in the fight against cancer.
