hikers-brave-42km-challenge-through-australian-wilderness-today

UPDATE: Adventurer and comedian Mandy Nolan has embarked on an intense 42-kilometer self-guided hike today through the stunning yet challenging terrain of Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk, linking Mount Jerusalem and Nightcap National Parks. Just hours into the trek, she expressed a mix of exhilaration and exhaustion, feeling emotionally overwhelmed amidst the breathtaking beauty of the Wanganui Gorge.

This morning, Nolan faced her fears as she traversed the rugged paths, confronting her anxiety around wildlife, particularly snakes. As she shared, “Everyone I told where I was going said, ‘watch out for snakes.’ That is not helpful.” Despite her trepidation, she found strength in the wild landscapes, emphasizing our need for nature’s fragile yet fierce existence.

Nolan, who recently returned from a month in Europe, described her experience of packing for the hike as reminiscent of a “giant menopausal turtle,” listing an array of supplies that included fresh underwear for each day. “I didn’t just bring a lighter, I brought a flamethrower,” she joked, highlighting her inexperience as a hiker.

Today’s hike is shaping up to be a test of endurance. As she and her fellow hikers prepared to tackle the notorious second day, known for its grueling ascent, Nolan noted, “Be prepared. Don’t eat breakfast until you get to the first lookout.” The forecast predicts temperatures soaring to 33 degrees Celsius, adding to the challenge.

As the group pressed on, Nolan and her companions, including women from varying age groups, bonded over shared struggles, underscoring the emotional power of the experience. “Finishing the walk with my two friends, I felt such a great sense of accomplishment,” she shared, reflecting on the camaraderie that helped her push through the most difficult moments.

The hike is not only a personal journey for Nolan but also serves as a reminder of the profound connection we have with the land. “I was reminded of the power of Country,” she stated, emphasizing the spiritual significance of walking through these ancient landscapes.

As the sun sets and the hikers set up camp, all eyes will be on how they tackle the remaining distance. “It’s hard, but do it. Just pick a cooler month,” Nolan advised, highlighting the importance of preparation and respect for nature.
