Gwyneth Paltrow recently shared her insights on the public reaction to her and ex-husband Chris Martin’s “conscious uncoupling” announcement, which sparked significant conversation when they separated in 2014 after nearly ten years of marriage. In an interview with the November issue of British Vogue, the actress discussed how their choice of words might have left some feeling as though they had “done divorce wrong.”
Paltrow reflected on the emotional landscape surrounding divorce, stating, “There’s a lot of hurt around divorce. It’s a difficult subject, and I think why people got so upset was that they heard, ‘Well, then, we did it wrong’ or ‘My parents did it wrong,’ which I understand.” She emphasized that the couple aimed to model a healthier approach to separation, particularly influenced by friends who had experienced painful divorces.
At the time of their split, Paltrow and Martin, who share two children—Apple, now 21, and Moses, 19—expressed their commitment to maintaining a family dynamic. They stated, “We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and co-parent, we will be able to continue in the same manner.”
Reflecting on their unconventional approach, Paltrow expressed pride in how they managed their breakup. “I’m still so proud that we did that and that we live it,” she remarked, noting how many people have thanked her for providing a different perspective on separation. She suggested the experience could warrant a book, acknowledging that while there were challenges, they ultimately found a successful path. “We f***** a lot of things up and then we got a lot of things right,” she added.
Four years after her split from Martin, Paltrow married director Brad Falchuk. She described her home life as a refuge from the chaos of the outside world, commenting, “I do believe there’s a strange energy in the world right now and I like to disconnect from it as much as possible.” Paltrow expressed gratitude for her marriage, stating that she finds fulfillment in the simplicity of their relationship.
As she continues to navigate her personal and professional life, Paltrow remains a compelling figure in the entertainment industry.
