The recent launch of the Apple Watch 11 has sparked discussions among consumers about whether it is worth the investment compared to the more budget-friendly Apple Watch SE 3. After spending three years with the Apple Watch SE 2, I upgraded to the latest model and have been impressed by various enhancements, particularly the larger display and faster performance. However, for many users, the SE 3 might prove to be the more practical choice.

The Apple Watch 11 features a brilliant, larger display and is powered by the new S10 processor, making its operations noticeably quicker. Enhanced battery life allows for up to 24 hours of use, which is beneficial for those who want to track their sleep with the new Sleep Score feature. The main motivation for my upgrade was the anticipated blood pressure monitoring capabilities. Unfortunately, as of now, the Therapeutic Goods Association in Australia has yet to approve this feature, leaving me unable to utilize one of the main selling points of the new watch.

Evaluating Key Features

While the Series 11 boasts advanced health features, the Apple Watch SE 3 offers nearly all essential health and fitness tracking tools at a significantly lower price point. The SE 3 retains key functionalities such as the Sleep Score and the performance boost from the S10 chip, allowing it to support features like the always-on display and double-tap gesture.

The Apple Watch 11 comes with a starting price of $399 / £369 / AU$679, while the SE 3 is much more accessible at $249 / £219 / AU$399. Notably, Jacob Kroll, a colleague and technology reviewer, rated the SE 3 higher in his review—4.5 stars compared to the Series 11’s 4 stars—indicating that the SE 3 might be a better fit for the average consumer.

Despite its advantages, the Series 11 does excel in battery life, lasting up to 24 hours compared to 18 hours for the SE 3. However, the SE 3 has a low-power mode that can extend usage to nearly two days. Additionally, with fast charging capabilities, users can quickly recharge the SE 3 before sleep tracking.

Durability and Connectivity

Durability has also improved with the SE 3, which uses Ion-X glass similar to that of the aluminum variant of the Series 11, making it significantly more resistant to damage. The SE 3 effectively meets the needs of users who want a reliable smartwatch without the extra cost associated with the Series 11.

One area where the Apple Watch SE 3 does fall short is in 5G connectivity, which is available on the Series 11. However, this feature may not be crucial for most users. Many individuals typically keep their smartphones nearby, rendering the need for a smartwatch with 5G capabilities less significant.

For those who require advanced health monitoring features, such as blood oxygen levels and irregular heart rhythm notifications, the Apple Watch 11 may be the more suitable option. However, for users without such health concerns, the SE 3 is an excellent choice that meets basic fitness tracking and smart functionalities.

In conclusion, while the Apple Watch 11 offers advanced features and performance, the Apple Watch SE 3 presents a compelling alternative for most users. It provides essential functionalities at a lower price, making it an ideal choice for those who do not require the latest health monitoring features. As consumers weigh their options, it’s advisable to consider personal needs and budget before making a decision.
