Lady Annabel Goldsmith, a prominent socialite and a close friend of the late Princess Diana, has passed away at the age of 91. Her death leaves behind six children, including journalist and film producer Jemima Goldsmith and former Conservative MP Zac Goldsmith, who are reportedly “desperately saddened” by her loss, according to MailOnline.
Born as Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart in London in 1934, she was the younger daughter of the 8th Marquess of Londonderry. Queen Elizabeth II famously attended her “coming-out” ball in 1952, marking the beginning of her notable social presence. Lady Annabel married Mark Birley in 1954, who later named the Mayfair nightclub Annabel’s in her honor in 1963. The couple had three children together: Rupert, Robin, and India Jane. Their marriage lasted for 21 years until Lady Annabel’s affair with Sir James Goldsmith, whom she married in 1978. Together, they had three more children: Jemima, Zac, and Ben.
Lady Annabel’s personal life attracted much attention, and she was known for her sharp wit. She once humorously remarked that she was “an incredible mother, rather a good mistress, but not a very good wife.” Just last month, she celebrated a family milestone by attending the wedding of her son Zac to Hum Fleming at St James’s Church in Longborough, located in the picturesque Cotswolds.
Tragedy struck early in Lady Annabel’s life when she lost both parents at a young age. Her mother died of cancer in 1951, and her father passed away in 1955. She assumed the title of Lady Annabel in 1949 at the age of 15, following her father’s elevation to Marquess upon the death of his own father.
Throughout her life, Lady Annabel Goldsmith was known for her vibrant personality and her connections to influential figures across various sectors, leaving a lasting impact on those around her. Her legacy will continue through her children and the many lives she touched across her extensive social network.
