BREAKING NEWS: Telethon has just smashed its previous fundraising records, raising an astonishing $1.5 million this year alone for vulnerable children across Western Australia (WA). This monumental achievement was made possible by the tireless efforts of school kids, community members, and corporate donors, showcasing the incredible spirit of generosity that defines this beloved event.

Last year, the Telethon fundraising total reached over $1 million for the first time. This year, that record has been obliterated, propelling the total raised since Telethon began in 1968 to over $750 million. This year’s funds will provide crucial support for at least 161 beneficiaries, directly benefiting countless children in need.

The extraordinary contributions came from various sources, including schools like St Francis Xavier College in Geraldton, where students raised $25,000 through bake sales, raffles, and fun runs. Additionally, everyday heroes like Luke Taylor, who completed over 700 km on a treadmill in just one week, and Andy Donaldson, who undertook a challenging swim-run-swim, raised thousands for the cause.

Major corporate donations significantly boosted the total, with the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation leading the way with a massive $10 million contribution. Other notable donors included BHP and Rio Tinto, each contributing $5.5 million, while Hancock and the McCusker Charitable Foundation added $2.5 million and $4 million respectively. The State Government generously donated $14 million, and the Federal Government chipped in with an additional $6 million.

Earlier this week, BHP Australia boss Geraldine Slattery emphasized the importance of Telethon, stating, “Telethon allows the community, business, and government to come together and pursue something amazing that we can all get behind to make a huge difference.”

Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles also expressed his admiration for the donations, sharing a personal story about his experience with a sick child. “Every year, we’re inspired by the big-heartedness of Australians who dig deep to support Telethon,” he stated.

The impact of Telethon was poignantly illustrated by Laetitia Cain, whose son Charlie battles two extremely rare genetic conditions. She remarked, “Telethon completely saved me and my family’s life,” underscoring the vital support these funds provide.

Every dollar raised this weekend will go directly toward helping WA’s most vulnerable children. As the Telethon theme suggests, we can truly be “Incredible Together.” With record-breaking totals and overwhelming community spirit, Telethon continues to be a beacon of hope for families in need.
