UPDATE: The Army 4 Brigade has launched a significant urban combat training operation in Bendigo, Victoria, from October 20 to 25, 2023. Residents are advised that armed military personnel will be active on the streets, although they will be using blank ammunition.
This week-long exercise, known as Exercise ARRAS WALK, focuses on enhancing the combat skills of soldiers in real-world environments. Local residents may experience the sounds of gunfire, but officials assure that no live ammunition will be used. The military presence aims to familiarize soldiers with the types of environments they might encounter in operations.
Brigadier Michelle McCormack, commander of the 4th Brigade, emphasized the importance of this training. “Exercising within communities provides increased realism in training,” McCormack stated. “Many of these soldiers are local or live in regional Victoria, and have assisted the community during floods and bushfires in recent years.”
Residents are reminded that while soldiers may be carrying weapons, all activities are conducted under strict safety protocols. “Some parts of the exercise will involve blank ammunition which simulates the sound of gunfire,” Brigadier McCormack continued. “This will be done in a controlled manner and in specific locations that have been pre-determined in consultation with Victoria Police.”
The operation includes military vehicles operating on public roads and local properties, specifically within the Bendigo and Puckapunyal Military Area. Authorities have coordinated closely with the City of Greater Bendigo and local police to ensure public safety during this training.
Bendigo’s community has historically supported military exercises, providing a vital connection between soldiers and the public. Brigadier McCormack acknowledged this relationship, stating that the exercise would not be possible without the “warm hospitality” of the Bendigo residents.
As this training unfolds, residents are encouraged to remain calm and informed. The military’s presence is intended for training purposes and is designed to enhance the operational readiness of troops.
Stay tuned for updates as the Army 4 Brigade continues its training in Bendigo throughout the week.
