Two fashion students from Perth have emerged victorious in the Cancer Council WA’s 2025 SunSmart Design Challenge. The competition highlights innovative designs that promote sun safety while showcasing the talents of emerging designers. Andrei McRobiene from North Metropolitan TAFE and Marie Guelden from Curtin University received top honors for their creative and functional garments.
McRobiene, a 20-year-old from Haynes, captivated the judges with a striking, cocoon-shaped garment. This piece featured voluminous lantern sleeves, full-length coverage, breathable cotton fabrics, and a modern streetwear aesthetic. Meanwhile, Guelden was recognized for her sustainable, zero-waste skirt designed with both style and sun protection in mind. Crafted from medium-weight cotton with a dense weave for UPF protection, her design ensured breathability and adequate coverage.
Inspiration and Impact
Reflecting on his design process, McRobiene drew inspiration from the renowned luxury fashion brand Balenciaga. “I’ve always loved Cristobal Balenciaga’s cocoon dresses from the past, so I used that influence to make a genderless SunSmart streetstyle piece,” he explained. “Growing up with sensitive skin in a tropical country, the advocacy from Cancer Council WA resonates deeply with me.”
Guelden also shared her motivation, emphasizing the importance of merging style with purpose. “Winning this award is an amazing opportunity as a young designer trying to make an impact in the industry,” she stated. “It shows that style and purpose can go hand in hand, giving me the confidence to continue creating thoughtful and impactful designs.”
Celebrating Creativity and Safety
The Cancer Council WA SunSmart Manager, Sally Blane, applauded the winners and underscored the project’s significance. “Now in its 15th year, the SunSmart Fashion Project has grown to include both Curtin University and North Metropolitan TAFE, providing a wider pool of emerging designers the chance to create stylish and sun-safe garments,” Blane noted. She highlighted the effectiveness of clothing as a simple and powerful form of sun protection.
The winning designs will be available for purchase at Ruck Rover General Store, located at 242 William St, Northbridge, starting on October 21, 2025. The limited run of these garments enables the public to embrace both fashion and sun safety. For further information, visit MyUV.
