PITTSBURGH – As the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare for their Sunday night clash with the Green Bay Packers, quarterback Aaron Rodgers has made it clear that he does not view the game as a “revenge match.” Speaking on Wednesday, Rodgers emphasized that he holds no animosity towards the team that drafted him No. 24 overall in 2005 and where he played for 18 seasons. He stated, “I don’t have any animosity toward the organization. Obviously, I wish that things had been better in our last year there, but I have a great relationship with a lot of people still in that organization.”

Rodgers, who took over as the Packers’ starting quarterback in 2008, orchestrated a trade to the New York Jets in April 2023, paving the way for Jordan Love to become the new starting quarterback in Green Bay. Reflecting on the upcoming game, Rodgers noted that while there are parallels between his transition and Love’s current experience, the atmosphere surrounding this matchup is markedly different. He remarked, “It would feel different if I was going back to Green Bay… I have a lot of love for the organization, but if we were playing in Lambeau, that would be a little different feeling for sure.”

The significance of this game is heightened by Rodgers’ lengthy tenure with the Packers. He mentioned that he is looking forward to reuniting with former teammates and playing on Sunday Night Football, adding, “That’s 18 years of my career.” His last game at Lambeau Field was on January 8, 2022, where he faced the Detroit Lions.

Reflecting on the past, Rodgers acknowledged the emotional complexity of the matchup, especially in contrast to the infamous 2009 game when Brett Favre faced the Packers as a member of the Minnesota Vikings. “Brett got traded, and then he went to one of the hated rivals,” Rodgers explained. He took a moment to appreciate his time in Green Bay, stating, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder, maybe… I have a lot of great memories from my time there.”

Rodgers also highlighted his ongoing relationship with Love, mentioning that he has communicated with him this season to discuss plays and strategies. “He’s a great kid, man,” Rodgers said. “I enjoyed my time with him. I’m not surprised by how he’s playing. He’s playing great.”

In Green Bay, Love confirmed their recent exchanges, expressing gratitude for Rodgers’ guidance. “A-Rod texted me and was talking about some of the plays we’d run and some of my footwork,” Love noted, indicating the mutual respect they share.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur praised Rodgers for his supportive role when they were together in Green Bay, noting, “He did a great job just being supportive with him, trying to give him nuggets all the time.” This mentorship has seemingly aided Love in his development as a quarterback.

Since signing a one-year contract with the Steelers in May, Rodgers has quickly integrated into the team. He recently invited offensive linemen and fellow quarterbacks to join him in a suite at PNC Arena for a hockey game, further building camaraderie with his new teammates.

After practice on Wednesday, Rodgers shared his appreciation for Pittsburgh and its passionate sports culture. He drew comparisons between the Steelers and the Packers, stating, “There’s only a few of those kind of cornerstone franchises in the league.” He acknowledged the special connection both teams have with their communities and the legacy of iconic players.

As kickoff approaches, Rodgers is eager to take the field against the Packers, focusing on the game rather than past grievances. His mature perspective reflects not only his respect for a franchise that shaped his career but also his commitment to his new chapter with the Steelers.
