Lime Cordiale, the ARIA Award-winning band, is set to headline a significant “climate concert” at the People’s Blockade in Newcastle, Australia, scheduled for November 27 to December 2, 2024. This event, organized by Rising Tide, aims to draw attention to climate issues while promoting a vibrant community atmosphere.

The People’s Blockade is positioned as a protestival, combining elements of protest with festival activities. It will take place at the world’s largest coal port, where thousands are expected to gather. Participants will engage in a variety of activities, including a flotilla of kayaks on Newcastle Harbour, workshops, and numerous concerts. Over 20 musical acts will perform throughout the event, with Lime Cordiale taking the stage on November 29.

Frontmen Oli and Louis Leimbach of Lime Cordiale have been vocal advocates for climate action. Louis emphasized the urgency of the climate crisis, stating, “It threatens the safety, livelihoods, and future of all Australians—and people right across the world.” He expressed enthusiasm for participating in the People’s Blockade, noting that current government plans do not adequately address future safety.

Oli echoed these sentiments, calling for immediate action and highlighting the need for investment in new jobs and industries in the Hunter region. “We’ve both always loved nature and wanted to do our part to help the planet, so we’re proud to stand with the thousands rising up to say: enough is enough,” he remarked.

The significance of this event extends beyond music. Naomi Hodgson, an organizer from Rising Tide, noted the cultural impact of the People’s Blockade. “It’s an emotive climate protest with the joyous atmosphere of a festival,” she said, underscoring the importance of bringing together a community passionate about climate issues.

Last year, the event attracted an estimated 7,000 attendees, with around 170 individuals arrested for blockading the port. The annual protest, organized by the climate activist group, calls for an end to new coal and gas projects and increased funding for transitioning away from coal.

As the People’s Blockade approaches, the involvement of high-profile musicians like Lime Cordiale highlights the growing public interest in addressing climate change and the transition to sustainable practices. The combination of artistic expression and activism aims to galvanize support for meaningful change in environmental policy.
