The celebration brought together current and former students, staff, parents, and local dignitaries, creating an atmosphere of joy and nostalgia.

The festivities kicked off with an official ceremony, where Pat Weir, Member for Condamine, and Geoff McDonald, Mayor of Toowoomba Region, highlighted the school’s critical role in the community. Mayor McDonald emphasized, “Small schools are the heart of our community, where life-long memories are made,” underscoring the significance of Wyreema State School in fostering local connections.

The event was organized by the school’s Parents and Citizens Association, led by President Andrea Carthoys, who welcomed guests and introduced student Alicia Sly for an Acknowledgement of Country. The school choir captivated the audience with performances of “Count On Me” and the original “Wyreema Warriors” song, celebrating not only the school’s history but its vibrant future.

Principal Sharon Wilson, who returned to the school after a 25-year teaching career, expressed her gratitude for the P&C’s efforts in organizing the anniversary celebrations. “You are the reason we are here,” she told the students, reinforcing their importance in the school’s legacy.

The event also honored the oldest surviving pupil, Eric Folker, aged 95, whose son read a speech on his behalf. Eric’s anecdotes from his school days drew laughter and admiration, showcasing the long-standing impact of Wyreema State School on generations of families.

The school, which has evolved into a flourishing educational facility in a growing area, is a testament to community resilience and dedication.
