As the Super Netball season races towards its conclusion, a whirlwind of events both on and off the court has captured the attention of fans and players alike. With just two weeks remaining before the finals, the West Coast Fever have surged to the top of the ladder, while an anonymous survey has revealed deep-seated mistrust among players towards the national sporting body. Meanwhile, Jo Harten has joined an elite group of netball greats by playing her 200th game.

West Coast Fever’s Dominance and Swifts’ Struggles

The West Coast Fever’s impressive form continued as they secured their 10th consecutive victory, defeating the Sunshine Coast Lightning 69-54. This win propelled them to the top of the ladder, overtaking the NSW Swifts, who suffered a surprising 68-64 loss to the Melbourne Mavericks. The Swifts, once unbeaten, have now dropped to second place after losing three of their last four matches.

The Fever’s resurgence can be attributed to the return of Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard, whose remarkable performance has been pivotal. Fowler-Nembhard has scored 600 goals in just 10 games, putting her just one goal behind Grace Nweke’s tally despite playing two fewer rounds.

Fowler-Nembhard’s return has transformed the Fever’s chances, marking them as strong contenders for the premiership.

As the finals approach, questions arise about whether the Swifts peaked too early. Although they have secured a semifinal spot, their recent form has seen their premiership favorite status overtaken by the Fever.

Survey Unveils Mistrust in Netball Australia

Off the court, the Australian Netball Players’ Association (ANPA) released findings from an anonymous survey that has sent ripples through the sport. The survey, the first of its kind, revealed that only 12% of players feel comfortable raising concerns with Netball Australia, with 32% stating that previous complaints resulted in no action or dismissal.

Remi Kamo’s earlier complaint about the Queensland Firebirds’ club culture highlighted these issues. The survey also showed that 67% of players felt mentally or emotionally drained due to the demands of elite netball, and 56% struggled with balancing their commitments.

“The results staring us in the face are real and … I think you learn more from those that aren’t at the level you’d hoped, because they’re the areas you can address and hopefully see improvements in,” ANPA chief executive Kathryn Harby-Williams told ABC Sport.

Financial concerns were also prevalent, with 69% of athletes worried about salary equity and job stability. ANPA is advocating for longer playing contracts to provide better financial stability, especially as the current collective player agreement expires on September 30.

Jo Harten’s 200-Game Milestone

On a more celebratory note, Jo Harten has joined the prestigious 200-game club, marking her appearances across the Tactix, Magic, and Giants. Harten, who has been a stalwart in netball for over a decade, has been instrumental in establishing the Giants Super Netball club and has led them to two grand final appearances.

“Sharelle was my idol growing up,” Harten said. “To be named alongside someone like her, it’s really special.”

Despite battling injuries and contemplating retirement, Harten remains a key figure in the sport. Her leadership and experience have been invaluable, and she has expressed interest in transitioning to coaching in the future.

As the regular season draws to a close, the next fortnight could mark the end of Harten’s illustrious playing career. The Giants, currently out of finals contention, face a crucial period as they plan for the future.

Looking Ahead

With the Super Netball finals on the horizon, teams are jostling for position, and off-court issues continue to shape the narrative. The revelations from the ANPA survey underscore the need for reform and improved relationships between players and the national body.

As Jo Harten contemplates her future, her legacy as one of netball’s greats is secure. Her potential move into coaching could provide a new chapter in her storied career.

The coming weeks promise excitement and drama as teams vie for the championship and the sport navigates its challenges. The Super Netball community will be watching closely as these stories unfold.
