David Dastmalchian and Kelly Marie Tran are set to star in the psychological thriller Kodak Super-XX, marking a significant entry into the film industry for both actors. The project, which serves as the feature directorial debut for Auden Bui, has been highlighted by industry sources such as Deadline.
Synopsis and Themes of Kodak Super-XX
The film, described as a neo-noir thriller, was penned by Tony Rettenmaier, known for his work on They Cloned Tyrone. Kodak Super-XX explores themes of loneliness, art, and the fine line between creation and obsession. The storyline focuses on Linh (played by Tran), a solitary woman whose life revolves around her role as a darkroom developer in one of the city’s last remaining boutique photo labs. Her mundane existence takes a dark turn when she becomes involved with a mysterious stranger, portrayed by Dastmalchian, whose photographs unveil unsettling secrets.
The film is being produced by Ron Perlman through his newly established media company, Asylm Studios. Bui expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “I’m thrilled that Asylm Studios selected Kodak Super-XX as its debut feature. The studio represents a return to filmmaking in its purest form—a focus on craft, story, and most importantly, the people who make it happen.”
Production Team and Collaborators
Dastmalchian will not only star in the film but also serve as a producer alongside Jen Iacobino from Good Fiend, and partners Juel Taylor, Josh Feldman, and Sean King O’Grady under the Death Ground Films banner. The film’s executive producers include Feras Majid Shammami from Robinwood7, as well as Perlman and Willie Morris from Asylm Studios.
Dastmalchian is no stranger to the thriller genre, having recently appeared in the film Late Night with the Devil released in 2023. Despite his experience, he candidly shared his struggles with anxiety when watching horror films. In a conversation with Junkee, he remarked on the unique experience of collective viewing, stating, “There’s something so fun about watching and seeing it happen in real time that it feels like you’re watching a live television broadcast.”
He emphasized the cathartic nature of horror films, explaining how they evoke strong emotions and reactions. “I struggle intensely with anxiety and anxious thoughts,” he admitted, highlighting the challenges he faces while engaging with the genre. “It’s kind of wonderfully cathartic in my humble horror nerd opinion.”
Kodak Super-XX aims to deliver a gripping narrative that not only captivates audiences but also delves into deeper psychological themes. With its intriguing premise and a talented cast, the film is one to watch in the upcoming cinematic landscape.
