UPDATE: Severe weather continues to loom over south-east Queensland as authorities warn of potential storms following a devastating hailstorm that struck the region on July 15, 2023. Although the worst of the system has likely passed, patches of heavy rain are expected in Brisbane over the next two days, according to senior meteorologist Angus Hines.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant as the risk for severe thunderstorms persists. “The rest of today is a little less severe,” Hines stated, while cautioning that “there’s still a chance of severe thunderstorms.” He emphasized that although the risk is not as extensive, pockets of damaging weather are still anticipated.

The hailstorm wreaked havoc on local businesses, including the popular Devilish Doughnuts stand at Esk State School, which was completely destroyed. Eyewitness accounts describe the storm as incredibly fierce, with significant injuries reported. An employee from Krunchy Kandy, Caleb, suffered a gash to his head and a possible broken hand while attempting to assist other affected businesses.

In Brisbane, up to 40 millimeters of rain fell in a brief but intense downpour, accompanied by wind speeds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour. Some areas of the Darling Downs experienced rainfall levels over double that amount. The most alarming reports indicated hailstones measuring up to 9 centimeters in diameter—larger than a cricket ball.

This sudden weather event has prompted emergency services to prepare for further impacts. While the immediate danger has diminished, the community remains on high alert. Residents are advised to stay tuned for updates and be prepared for adverse conditions.

As the situation develops, local authorities continue to assess the damage and provide support to affected areas. The community is encouraged to report any hazardous conditions and seek assistance if needed.
