UPDATE: The South Gippsland Shire Council has confirmed the Foster Showgrounds as the designated site for a new skatepark, prompting urgent discussions among local stakeholders about its potential impact on the town’s annual Show. In a decisive vote during its October meeting, council members endorsed the showgrounds for the facility, stating that further stakeholder consultation will identify the specific location within the grounds.
The Foster & District Agricultural & Pastoral Society is concerned that this development could hinder the Show’s success. Secretary Den Gilheany expressed that the tight space already poses a significant challenge for organizing the popular event, which attracts 3,500 attendees each year. “With the skatepark likely taking up space comparable to two netball courts, we are left wondering how we will accommodate new entertainment and competitions,” she stated.
Council’s choice of location within the Showgrounds has raised alarms. “It would impact the woodchop, one of the main attractions of the Show,” Den explained. The skatepark’s placement could also disrupt access for livestock delivery, a crucial aspect of the event.
While the council acknowledges the Society’s concerns, they argue that the Show operates for just one weekend a year, while the skatepark could provide year-round benefits. However, Den insists that the long-term ramifications for the Show must be considered.
“Locating the skatepark at the Foster train station was another option we proposed,” Den added. Although the estimated cost to develop that site would be around $500,000 due to necessary infrastructure improvements, she believes this could boost local tourism and attract visitors to Foster.
The Society submitted formal feedback to the council, questioning whether community views were adequately represented in the decision-making process, but received no favorable response. As the planning phase continues, the Society must advocate for a location within the Showgrounds that minimizes disruption.
As the community awaits further consultation details, the implications of this decision loom large. The Foster Show is not just a local event; it is a significant day for the entire community, heavily supported by volunteers who dedicate countless hours to its success.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as the council confirms how and when additional stakeholder consultations will take place.
