The South East Melbourne Phoenix triumphed over the Perth Wildcats with a hard-fought 94-89 victory at John Cain Arena on March 10, 2024. The win solidifies the Phoenix’s impressive home record, improving to 4-0 this season. Nathan Sobey led the team with a game-high 22 points, demonstrating exceptional composure at the free-throw line during critical moments.

Owen Foxwell contributed significantly, scoring 20 points and providing five assists, while John Brown III added 12 points and secured eight rebounds. Next Star Malique Lewis delivered a well-rounded performance, recording 11 rebounds and six assists alongside his two points. Unfortunately, Angus Glover suffered an ankle injury late in the game after scoring 12 points.

Despite shooting less than 40 percent from the field and 30 percent from beyond the arc, the Phoenix showcased their resilience. Coach Josh King emphasized the importance of effort and defense, stating, “The ball’s not always going to fall but you can always bring energy, you can always bring hustle and you can always bring the defensive side.” Brown’s defensive presence was crucial, anchoring the team when shooting struggles arose.

For the Wildcats, Kristian Doolittle was a standout performer, amassing 19 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists. Jaron Rillie added 16 points and seven assists, while Dylan Windler marked his return from an ankle injury with 15 points and five assists. However, David Duke Jr., making his NBL debut, faced challenges, finishing with eight points and three turnovers before fouling out.

The game maintained a close scoreline throughout, with neither team leading by more than six points in the first three quarters. A jumper from Brown gave the Phoenix a narrow 75-72 lead heading into the final period. The momentum shifted as Sobey hit a critical three-pointer, extending the Phoenix’s advantage to nine points. However, the Wildcats responded swiftly, with Doolittle scoring two consecutive baskets to keep the contest within reach.

In a pivotal moment, Sobey made a crucial defensive play by blocking Jo Lual-Acuil’s shot in the final minute. As tension mounted, Glover’s injury and Rillie’s three-point shot brought the Wildcats within two points. Doolittle’s defensive prowess was evident as he blocked Sobey’s lay-up attempt, but a foul by Windler allowed Sobey to secure the victory with two successful free throws.

Post-game remarks from Rillie highlighted the Wildcats’ struggles with turnovers, stating, “Twenty turnovers is way too much. We were just too loose in some moments.” He emphasized the need for simpler plays and better ball movement.

Looking ahead, the Phoenix will face Tasmania in an away game and Melbourne United at home in round eight, while the Wildcats prepare for a significant matchup against Bryce Cotton’s Adelaide 36ers next Sunday.
