UPDATE: Deqing’s “Freshwater Pear Mussels Composite Fishery System” has just been officially recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS) by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This prestigious accolade was awarded on October 31, 2025, in Rome, Italy, marking a significant milestone for the Huzhou region in Zhejiang Province, China.
This recognition is monumental, elevating the count of GIAHS in China to 25 and solidifying the nation’s position as the leader in global agricultural heritage. Huzhou previously received its first GIAHS title in 2017 for the “Mulberry-Dyke and Fish-Pond System.”
Deqing’s heritage as a pioneer in artificial freshwater pearl cultivation, which dates back to the Southern Song Dynasty approximately 800 years ago, has culminated in this unique aquaculture system. This composite system not only promotes a natural ecological cycle but also exemplifies a sustainable balance between economic growth and environmental preservation.
During the awarding ceremony, Dejan Jakovljevic, Director of Digitalization and Informatics at the FAO, emphasized the intersection of digital technology and heritage protection. He stated that innovative tools can support the sustainable safeguarding of Deqing’s aging pearl-harvesting ecosystem, breathing new life into this traditional practice.
“Digital means can promote the ‘Deqing Freshwater Pear Mussels Composite Fishery System,’ ensuring its protection while revitalizing it for future generations,” Jakovljevic noted.
This recognition is not merely an acknowledgment of centuries-old wisdom in pearl cultivation; it opens doors for international collaboration and the integrated development of Deqing’s entire pearl industry. The GIAHS title, paired with digital innovation, presents a promising future for the region, merging tradition with modernity.
As Deqing moves forward, the community is poised to leverage this honor to enhance its agricultural heritage, creating new economic opportunities while preserving its rich cultural history for generations to come. The blend of tradition and technology is set to redefine how agricultural practices are viewed and managed globally.
In the coming weeks, watch for further developments as Deqing positions itself on the world stage, showcasing its pearl industry and agricultural heritage. This significant achievement is expected to draw interest from international partners eager to explore sustainable agricultural practices.
