The Carlton Blues have secured their spot in the AFLW finals for the first time since 2020, finishing the regular season in sixth place. This achievement came after a decisive victory over the West Coast Eagles, setting the stage for an elimination final at Ikon Park on Saturday.

Veteran player Darcy Vescio reflected on the motivation that drove the team throughout the season. “I remember when we were having our exit interviews last year, watching the Hawks train and prepare with their captain’s run,” she said. “That was a fair bit of motivation.” The sight of other teams preparing for finals ignited a fire within the Blues, pushing them to strive for their own shot at glory.

Vescio’s performance was pivotal in clinching the win against West Coast. She capped off the match with a spectacular torpedo kick after the siren, showcasing her skill and determination. “As soon as I struck it, I was like, ‘oh, that’s gonna go’,” she recalled, noting the excitement of celebrating a hard-fought entry into the finals. “It’s really exciting to be back in that position. Everyone wants to play finals.”

The Blues have demonstrated consistent improvement over the past three years under coach Mathew Buck. Vescio highlighted the team’s growth and the sustainable approach they have taken to establish themselves as a competitive force in the league. “To get there and feel like you’ve done it, not spontaneously, but by winning convincingly, that’s super exciting,” she added.

Looking ahead to their matchup against West Coast, Vescio acknowledged the tactical prowess of Eagles’ coach Daisy Pearce. “She’s a great tactician,” Vescio stated, emphasizing the need for the Blues to be prepared for any adjustments Pearce might make.

Teammate Gab Pound expressed confidence in the team’s ability to perform well in the finals, crediting their improved scoring and strategic shifts in their game plan this season. “We’ve shown that we can match up against some really good sides and win convincingly,” she said. “This year we’ve been able to score a lot more goals.”

With the excitement building for the elimination final, the Carlton Blues aim to harness the enthusiasm of their supporters and channel it into a successful playoff run. The team is poised to make an impact in November, eager to turn their aspirations into reality.

As the finals approach, the Blues are not just satisfied to be back in the postseason; they are determined to make their mark. Their journey has been one of resilience and ambition, and the upcoming match against West Coast will be a critical test of their abilities and aspirations.
