UPDATE: A new family-friendly running festival is set to take place in Armidale at Civic Park on March 2-3, 2024, promising an exciting weekend for locals and tourists alike. Organiser Ryan Kelso has confirmed that the inaugural event aims to celebrate community spirit while promoting health and fitness.
Kelso was inspired to launch the festival after witnessing the success of a similar event in a coastal town. “I thought, why can’t we hold a running festival in Armidale?” he stated. The festival will not only feature races but also a vibrant atmosphere filled with live music, local food, and various community stalls.
The event kicks off with a 1-kilometre free fun run for kids, followed by 3-kilometre, 5-kilometre, and 10-kilometre runs on Saturday. The highlight will be a half-marathon on Sunday, making it inclusive for participants of all fitness levels. “There are a lot of runners in Armidale, and a lot of good runners too,” Kelso noted.
This festival is designed as a full-day experience, featuring kids’ activities, picnic zones, and spaces for families to relax and enjoy. By opening the event on Saturday at midday, Kelso ensures that families with morning commitments can still participate. “We are encouraging visitors to explore what Armidale has to offer, from our cafes to beautiful local waterfalls,” he added.
Kelso emphasized the overwhelming support from the community, particularly from organizations such as UNE, Armidale Servies, and New England Toyota. The goal is not just to cover costs but to reinvest any surplus back into the community, fostering a spirit of unity and support.
As anticipation builds, Kelso expects competitive runners from outside the region to compete for prize money. However, the festival’s main focus is on creating a family-friendly environment. “While some family members run, kids can enjoy face painting and jumping castles,” he explained.
This festival represents a unique opportunity for Armidale to showcase its rich community spirit while promoting health and wellness. As the date approaches, residents and visitors alike are encouraged to participate, explore, and celebrate what makes Armidale special.
