Belarus has been identified as the 16th most authoritarian country globally, trailing behind even Russia in terms of political freedom, according to The Economist‘s democracy index. Tikhanovskaya described the oppressive atmosphere in Belarus, stating, “It’s a strategy of Russia to keep people stressed, intimidated, to keep people in fear.” She emphasized the daily struggle faced by those opposing the regime.
Despite these challenges, Tikhanovskaya remains determined to raise awareness about the plight of Belarusian citizens. While traveling in an Uber to her next event, she remarked, “Our power, our strength, is to overcome it.” Her message during the Sydney visit was clear: she urges international leaders to stand firm against authoritarianism and support those fighting for freedom.
