The Senate of Australia has approved legislation to establish a permanent Australian Centre for Disease Control (CDC), marking a pivotal advancement in the country’s public health framework. This decision, made on November 5, 2023, signals a commitment to enhancing national health responses and will see the new CDC begin operations in January 2026. The permanent institution will take over from the interim CDC, which has been functioning since January 2024.

Dr. Lisa Murphy, the CEO of the Stroke Foundation, expressed her enthusiasm regarding the establishment of the permanent CDC, describing it as a “momentous day for public health in Australia.” She emphasized that this development will substantially bolster Australia’s ability to respond to health crises, improve pandemic preparedness, and address chronic disease prevention effectively.

“This is a most welcome announcement. A permanent Australian CDC will strengthen Australia’s public health capability, provide national leadership, and coordinate effective public health responses,” Dr. Murphy stated. She added that the Stroke Foundation anticipates collaborating with the new CDC Director-General and the Government to combat the rising incidence of preventable chronic diseases, particularly strokes.

In Australia, approximately 46,000 stroke events occur each year, with research indicating that about 80 percent of strokes are preventable. The establishment of a permanent CDC is crucial, as stroke remains one of the leading causes of death and disability in the nation.

Public health experts have long advocated for a dedicated Australian CDC, recognizing the need for improved coordination and response mechanisms. The importance of this initiative was underscored in the findings of Australia’s COVID-19 Response Inquiry, which revealed significant gaps in the country’s pandemic preparedness and public health infrastructure.

The new CDC will not only focus on immediate health crises but will also play a vital role in long-term strategies to reduce the burden of chronic diseases in Australia. The Stroke Foundation looks forward to engaging in productive discussions with the CDC as they work together to implement effective public health strategies and initiatives.

As Australia prepares for the full operational launch of the permanent CDC, the focus remains on enhancing public health capabilities to ensure a healthier future for all Australians.
