UPDATE: Holbrook Public School has officially marked its 150th anniversary today, November 6, 2023, with a vibrant celebration that brought together scores of former students and current pupils. The event highlighted a significant milestone in the school’s history, including the unveiling of a newly restored school bell that had languished in decay for decades.
During the special assembly, attendees were treated to nostalgic tales, including a humorous incident involving a snake that once caused chaos in the classroom. District farmer Phil Hunter, who attended the school from 1955 to 1963, recounted the story of a black snake brought in for a biology lesson. “The boys attached a string to it and pulled it,” Hunter explained. “The teacher screamed and ran out of the room.” His playful reminiscence encapsulated the spirit of the celebration.
The school, originally established as Germanton Public School in July 1875, underwent several transformations, becoming Holbrook in 1915 and later Holbrook Central School in 1944. Today, it serves around 130 students, a consistent enrollment according to Principal Louise Purss-Semple, who has been leading the school for three years. “It’s been a great celebration for the community,” she said, emphasizing the school’s strong ties to local families.
The festivities kicked off earlier this week on November 3, with students donning 1875 attire and engaging in lessons at the former schoolhouse at Holbrook’s Woolpack Inn Museum. Past teachers Chris Hunter and Judy Ross, along with current educator Kate Wedgwood, guided the students through the rich history of their school.
Among those celebrating was the Ross family, who have a nearly century-long connection to the school. Starting with Robert Ross in the 1930s and continuing through his son Russell, wife Judy, and their daughter Claire, the legacy continues with young George Ross, age 8, currently in Year 2. When asked about his favorite part of school, George said, “just playing sport,” before adding that math is his favorite subject.
The anniversary celebration not only honored the school’s history but also reinforced its role as a pillar of the community. As the day progressed, stories from multiple generations filled the air, showcasing the deep-rooted connections families have with Holbrook Public School.
