Casio has introduced an upgraded version of its famed G-Shock watch series, unveiling the GW-BX5600-1 model. This latest iteration features a memory-in-pixel (MIP) display, significantly improving screen readability in bright conditions. This enhancement directly addresses a longstanding criticism of G-Shock watches, which have often struggled with legibility in sunlight.

The new MIP display replaces the previous STN LCD screen found in earlier 5000/5600-series G-Shock models. With this change, the digits are now brighter and crisper, allowing for better visibility from various angles. This improvement is particularly beneficial for outdoor enthusiasts who rely on the watch’s functionality during activities in bright environments.

Key Features of the GW-BX5600-1

Beyond the improved display, the GW-BX5600-1 includes a host of features designed for active users. It boasts a solar-powered battery that can last up to six months with regular use and extends to 22 months in low power mode on a single charge. The watch maintains its reputation for durability, offering both shock resistance and water resistance up to 200 meters.

Additionally, the watch integrates Multiband 6 radio control for accurate timekeeping and Bluetooth connectivity, allowing users to manage settings via a smartphone app. Other functionalities include a double LED backlight, a 24-hour auto calendar, five daily alarms, a countdown timer, and a world time display. Customization options are also available, enabling users to adjust the display layout and choose from two font styles for a personalized look.

Availability and Pricing

Casio offers two design variations for the GW-BX5600-1. The standard model features silver highlights for a lighter appearance, while the GW-BX5600-1A1 adopts a darker, more subdued aesthetic. Interested buyers can preorder either model on Casio’s website for ¥30,800 (approximately $200) or £159. The company has indicated that the watches will be available “soon.”

This update positions Casio’s G-Shock line as competitive with other rugged watches on the market, particularly those from brands like Garmin that have previously utilized similar display technology. For fans of the classic G-Shock, the GW-BX5600-1 represents a significant step forward, merging traditional design with modern functionality.
