Renowned drag performer and cabaret artist Le Gateau Chocolat, born George Ikediashi, is set to showcase his talent at the City Recital Hall in November 2023. This performance is part of a collaborative project titled Cocteau’s Circle, featuring the Brisbane-based contemporary circus company Circa and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. The show will recreate the spirit of Le Boeuf sur le Toit, a historic Parisian cabaret that attracted artistic icons such as Jean Cocteau and Pablo Picasso.
George Ikediashi’s journey from a trained lawyer to a prominent figure in the drag scene is noteworthy. Raised in a deeply religious Nigerian family, he faced significant challenges regarding his identity. Upon returning to Lagos, he experienced bullying, which forced him to adapt and develop a “master of disguise” persona. He explains, “From very early on, I knew my sexuality didn’t really have a place in Nigeria or in my culture.”
This struggle continued when he returned to the UK, where he faced further bullying. Standing at six feet tall, and six-and-a-half feet in heels, Ikediashi channeled his experiences into a powerful artistic voice. He pursued opera singing after his legal studies, adopting the stage name Le Gateau Chocolat—a clever nod to both the musical term “legato” and a celebration of his identity.
Since 2008, Le Gateau Chocolat has captivated audiences worldwide, performing in prestigious venues such as Glyndebourne, the Royal Opera House, the Adelaide Fringe, and the Sydney Opera House. His performances blend a mix of high art and entertainment, showcasing a repertoire that spans from classical composers like Wagner to pop icons such as Whitney Houston.
As he prepares for the upcoming performances, Le Gateau Chocolat reflects on the duality of his identity. He draws parallels between himself and Cocteau, noting, “Cocteau had a father who was a lawyer, but I have a law degree and have never practiced law.” This sentiment highlights his commitment to breaking traditional molds.
Le Gateau Chocolat identifies as a “clown” in the drag world, emphasizing his goal to challenge societal norms. “I’m not a female impersonator; I have a beard. I consider myself a clown, whose job it is to make people laugh and open their hearts to someone who looks like me – black, fat and queer,” he states. He aims to “discomfort the comfortable and comfort the discomforted,” reinforcing the transformative power of art.
The Cocteau’s Circle tour will run from November 8-22, 2023, offering audiences a chance to witness a unique blend of drag, music, and contemporary circus. As Le Gateau Chocolat continues to redefine expectations, he leaves an indelible mark on the performing arts scene, encouraging acceptance and celebration of diversity.
