On November 8, 2023, the NSW/ACT Baptist Association voted to disaffiliate Avalon Baptist Church and Seaforth Baptist Church, both located on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. This decision follows a similar disaffiliation of Canberra and Hamilton Baptist churches within the past year. The split stems from Avalon Baptist’s acceptance of marriage equality, a stance that contrasts sharply with the Association’s rejection of such inclusivity.

Dr. Sally Longley, Pastor of Avalon Baptist Church, expressed profound sadness regarding the Association’s decision. “We acknowledge the NSW/ACT Baptist Association decision with deep sadness,” she stated. Dr. Longley emphasized the church’s belief that the Association’s stance on marriage equality is un-Biblical and unwelcoming. She remarked, “We fail to understand the Association’s refusal to have a mutual respect that enables continued fellowship with us.”

Avalon Baptist Church has long prided itself on embracing diversity and fostering an inclusive environment. “Avalon Baptist celebrates and rejoices in God’s great diversity,” Dr. Longley noted. The church aims to provide a genuinely safe space for all individuals, including those who identify as LGBTQI. The pastor affirmed the church’s commitment to inclusivity, stating, “We do not have hidden blocks to participating fully in all our activities.”

In response to the disaffiliation, Avalon Baptist Church will transition its membership to the newly formed Open Baptists, which supports marriage equality and encourages dialogue among differing views. Dr. Longley remarked, “We will continue to pray for the Association,” highlighting a desire for reconciliation despite the differences.

Brad Dalton, Secretary and Deacon of Avalon Baptist Church, reinforced the importance of inclusivity within the church community. “There are many faithful followers of Jesus who are LGBTQI, and many have members of their family or extended family who are LGBTQI,” he said. Dalton emphasized that Avalon Baptist strives to follow the way of Christ by being open and welcoming to all.

The disaffiliation has sparked discussions about the broader implications for Baptist congregations in Australia. As societal views on marriage and equality evolve, churches face challenging decisions regarding their beliefs and affiliations. Avalon Baptist’s commitment to inclusivity may serve as a model for other religious organizations navigating similar dilemmas.
