UPDATE: A critical community planting event is set to take place TOMORROW, November 13, 2023, from 8:30 AM to noon at Naughtons Gap, as volunteers aim to enhance the Casino to Bentley Rail Trail. This initiative, spearheaded by Emma Stone from the Border Ranges – Richmond Valley Landcare Network, will see the planting of an additional 500 trees and native grasses, expanding the ongoing environmental efforts in the area.
Residents and nature enthusiasts are encouraged to join this urgent call to action, following the successful planting of 700 trees, shrubs, and grasses in the past year. “The momentum is continuing, and we are ready to roll with the next round of planting,” Stone stated, emphasizing the importance of creating future habitat and shade for rail trail users.
Originally scheduled for October 23, the event was postponed due to dry conditions, but with recent rain softening the soil, the planting can now proceed. “It looks to be a great day, with the forecast offering some rain in the days prior and then again the following weekend,” Stone confirmed, inviting all who love the rail trail to participate.
Parking will be available on the north side of the bridge on Naughtons Gap Road, marked by a “field day sign.” Participants will need to walk or bike 600 meters to the planting zone. Organizers advise bringing drinking water, hats, gloves, long pants, and closed-toe boots. No tools are required as holes will be pre-dug, and morning tea will be provided for all attendees.
Stone encourages everyone interested to register for the event to ensure adequate provisions. “We would appreciate if people register their attendance to ensure we have sufficient morning tea for everyone,” she added.
The planting event will continue in mild wet weather, but should heavy rain or extreme heat occur, it will be rescheduled.
