UPDATE: The South Gisborne Tennis Club is gearing up to celebrate a remarkable 25 years of its All Abilities program on November 27, 2023. This milestone celebration coincides with the International Day of People with Disability and promises a day filled with engaging activities for all participants and spectators alike.

Starting at 10 AM and running until 1 PM, attendees can expect an array of tennis-related games, including opportunities to try pickleball and even take on the coach in friendly competitions. The event will take place at the club’s facilities located at 176 Millett Road, South Gisborne, and all necessary equipment will be provided for participants.

Gail Scott, the All Abilities coordinator, invites the entire community to join in on the celebration. “There’ll be adaptive equipment like eye gear, if you want to know what it’s like to be partially blind and play tennis,” she explained, emphasizing the importance of understanding the challenges faced by those with disabilities. “It will give you an idea of what obstacles they have to go through, just to play tennis.”

The All Abilities program is a modified tennis initiative designed to accommodate individuals with various disabilities, including low or no vision, hearing impairments, and mobility challenges. Participants from local organizations like Distinctive Options and Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Specialist School regularly join the program, alongside other community groups from surrounding areas.

“It’s just a wonderful thing to have as part of your club because that’s what community clubs should do,” Ms. Scott remarked, highlighting the positive impact of inclusivity in sports. The upcoming event not only celebrates a quarter-century of this vital program but also reinforces the club’s commitment to fostering an inclusive community.

As excitement builds, residents are encouraged to spread the word and participate in this significant event. For more information about the celebration or the All Abilities program, contact Gail Scott at 0403 760 272.
