Prince William delivered an unexpected video message to radio presenter Sara Cox, encouraging her as she concluded her charity challenge for BBC Children in Need. The royal congratulated the broadcaster for raising over £4.1 million and urged her to “keep going” as she neared the finish line of her 135-mile Great Northern Marathon Challenge.

On November 14, 2025, during the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show, the 43-year-old Duke of Cambridge praised the 50-year-old Cox for her dedication. He remarked, “Sara, massive congratulations for what you are doing. You are so nearly there, just a little bit further.” William added, “I know the people of Pudsey will all come out and welcome you with huge open arms, big hugs… and hopefully, lots of your favourite crumpets. Keep going. You’ve done fantastically well, and the nation is so proud of you.”

Cox, visibly moved by the heartfelt message, expressed her gratitude, saying, “Wow, thanks William, big thank you! Thank you, thanks that’s very nice!”

Helen Thomas, Head of BBC Radio 2, lauded Cox’s efforts, stating, “Sara has truly captured the nation’s heart.” She noted the overwhelming support from listeners who provided both financial contributions and emotional encouragement throughout Cox’s journey. Thomas emphasized the significance of the challenge: “Sara’s Great Northern Marathon Challenge is one incredible example of BBC broadcasting at its best, bringing the nation together to raise much needed funds for Children in Need.”

Cox embarked on her ambitious five-day mission to transport the BBC Children in Need mascot, Pudsey, from border to heartland. She traversed 135 miles on foot across four counties: Northumberland, Durham, North Yorkshire, and West Yorkshire. This event marks Radio 2’s longest-ever charity challenge in terms of duration.

With determination and resilience, Cox relied solely on her own two feet, alternating between walking and jogging. Her journey not only showcased her physical endurance but also highlighted the spirit of community, as crowds lined the streets to cheer her on. Children waved signs of support and offered high-fives, demonstrating the unifying power of her challenge.

The response from the British public has been remarkable. Thomas added, “Every act of kindness and every donation has made a real difference.” Cox’s efforts have inspired many, showcasing the impact that dedicated individuals can have when rallying for a noble cause.

As she approached the end of her grueling challenge, the support from Prince William and the nation exemplified the collective spirit of giving that defines the annual Children in Need campaign.
