UPDATE: The Werribee Giants faced another crushing defeat in the Baseball Victoria summer league premier 1 competition, losing 6-5 to Geelong in a nail-biting match on April 15, 2023. This comes just days after securing a lucky 5-2 victory against Doncaster, highlighting the team’s struggle to maintain momentum.

In the mid-week game, the Giants finally tasted success after enduring a series of narrow losses. The only match that went ahead, the Giants capitalized on their opportunity, with coach Cameron Brown expressing relief at finally getting their second win on the board. “It was nice to come out and play that way,” Brown stated, praising the effort of his players.

Despite the victory, the Giants’ good fortune did not last. On Saturday, they battled hard against Geelong, who initially led 5-2 after six innings. A late-game surge from the Giants fell just short, leaving them in 13th place in the standings after seven rounds. “We were right there, and we did so much right,” Brown said, reflecting on the tight match.

The Giants recorded 15 hits compared to Geelong’s 8, yet failed to convert their opportunities into runs. “There were a few key moments where we didn’t execute to win,” Brown noted, emphasizing the critical turning points that led to their defeat.

Levi Packer and Addison Bishop-Worn both contributed significantly during the win against Doncaster, hitting two runs each. However, against Geelong, the team’s inability to capitalize on their hitting prowess proved costly.

Looking ahead, the Giants have a busy week with a mid-week game against Malvern before facing Fitzroy on Saturday. Brown remains optimistic, stating, “We feel like if we play our best, we are right up there with anyone. We’re really looking forward to it.”

In the women’s state competition, the Giants are riding high, securing a convincing 9-3 victory against Springvale. With a strong 5-1 record, they currently sit in second place on the ladder, showcasing the talent and resilience of the Werribee Giants as they navigate a challenging season.

As the team battles through these ups and downs, fans remain hopeful that the Giants can turn their fortunes around as the season progresses. Stay tuned for more updates on their journey in the coming weeks.
