BREAKING: Professor Rose McGready has just been awarded the prestigious title of 2026 Australian of the Year for ACT during a ceremony held in Canberra on November 17, 2025. Her remarkable contributions to migrant and refugee health have been recognized alongside other notable figures, including football pioneer Heather Reid AM, historian Sita Sargeant, and mental health advocate Ben Alexander.

Professor McGready, a dedicated health expert with over 31 years of service, has transformed healthcare access for displaced individuals along the Thailand-Myanmar border. Arriving as a young doctor, she was confronted with the dire need for medical support among refugees fleeing persecution. In response, she established vital training programs for local health staff, significantly improving services for expectant mothers and newborns.

Under her leadership, a network of community-run clinics has emerged, saving thousands of lives. Her groundbreaking research into maternal malaria has not only resulted in new treatment protocols but has also been adopted by the World Health Organization, setting a global standard that has benefited millions of women worldwide.

The ceremony also celebrated Heather Reid AM, named 2026 Senior Australian of the Year for ACT. Reid’s groundbreaking work in women’s football has opened doors for countless female athletes. As the first female CEO of Capital Football in 2004, she unified local associations and helped establish Canberra United in the national W-League, promoting women’s participation in sports.

Meanwhile, Sita Sargeant has been recognized as the 2026 Young Australian of the Year for ACT. Sargeant founded “She Shapes History,” a historical tourism initiative that highlights women’s often-overlooked stories across Australia. Through her innovative storytelling and digital content, she has engaged over 10,000 participants on her tours, expanding the initiative to major cities like Sydney and Melbourne.

Lastly, Ben Alexander was named 2026 Local Hero for ACT for his vital work in mental health advocacy. A former rugby star, Alexander co-founded Running for Resilience (R4R) to foster a suicide-free Canberra by 2033. His initiative connects individuals through weekly runs and walks, promoting both physical and mental health while building a supportive community.

Mark Fraser AO CVO, CEO of the National Australia Day Council, praised all recipients for their tireless work and dedication to improving the lives of others. “These individuals exemplify compassion and leadership, each making significant contributions in their fields,” he stated.

The ACT award recipients will now move on to compete for the national title on January 25, 2026. This year’s awards shine a light on extraordinary individuals who are making a profound impact, reminding us of the importance of community, health, and inclusion.
