New York police have released surveillance images of a suspect connected to the shooting of New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd. The incident occurred early on Sunday morning, just after 02:00 ET, outside a business on West 38th Street near 7th Avenue in midtown Manhattan. Boyd, who was shot in the abdomen, is currently in critical but stable condition at Bellevue Hospital.

Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the shooting and have not confirmed whether Boyd was specifically targeted. No additional injuries were reported, and as of now, no arrests have been made. According to reports, a dispute between Boyd and the shooter escalated, leading to the gunman firing two shots before fleeing the scene in a BMW X8 SUV. A Mercedes-Benz Maybach was also seen leaving the area shortly after the incident.

New York Mayor Eric Adams‘ office has identified Boyd as the shooting victim. The Jets organization has acknowledged the situation involving Boyd but has chosen to refrain from making further comments. Boyd’s agent has not responded to requests for additional information regarding the shooting.

Jets linebacker Jermaine Johnson took to social media to express his concern, saying, “Everybody please send prayers to my brother and teammate Kris Boyd and his family!!! Lord please hold your healing hand over Kris and guide him back to health and safety.” Johnson also shared a prayer for Boyd’s recovery.

Boyd, who has not played this season due to a shoulder injury that required surgery, was placed on season-ending injured reserve in August. He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was expected to significantly contribute to a revamped special teams unit under new coach Aaron Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Boyd suffered his injury during a training camp practice on August 2, 2023, and was carted off the field.

Before joining the Jets, Boyd had established himself as a special teams standout over six NFL seasons, primarily with the Houston Texans. He gained national attention during the Texans’ playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs in January, where he celebrated a forced fumble on a kickoff in a dramatic fashion.

As the investigation continues, the Jets and the wider sports community are rallying around Boyd and his family during this challenging time, hoping for a swift recovery.
