The local community in Buff Point is set to play a pivotal role in determining the future of their dog park. Mayor Lawrie McKinna announced that the decision regarding the relocation of the dog park will be guided by community preferences. “We’ve identified two suitable sites and now we’re asking the community to let us know which option they prefer,” he stated.
This initiative aims to maximize the use of available space for both recreational and sporting activities, while ensuring that the dog park remains a safe and enjoyable environment for residents. “This approach also supports the draft Dogs in Open Space Action Plan, developed with input from local residents,” added McKinna.
Community Engagement and New Facilities
Director of Community and Recreation Services Melanie Smith expressed enthusiasm about the potential benefits of relocating the dog park. Although the current location has been a popular destination for local dog owners, Smith believes a new site could enhance the experience for both pets and their owners.
“A new location could offer improved access to public toilets, more room for dogs to play, and a more welcoming environment for pet owners to connect and enjoy the outdoors,” she explained. The proposed relocation aligns with the Council’s broader vision for Buff Point Oval. Over the past three years, approximately $2 million has been invested in upgrades to the site, which include new drainage, irrigation, lighting, and the construction of a modern amenities building, along with plans for a formalized carpark.
These enhancements are designed to meet the growing demand from local sporting clubs and cater to the needs of the community.
How to Participate in the Decision-Making Process
The community is encouraged to visit yourvoiceourcoast.com to cast their vote on the preferred location for the dog park. Residents can choose between relocating within Buff Point Oval or moving to Edgewater Park, located on Narambi Road. Voting will remain open until December 10, 2023.
The construction of the new dog park is scheduled for completion by June 2026. This project reflects the Council’s commitment to involving the community in decisions that shape their environment, ensuring that the new park meets the needs and expectations of local residents.
