URGENT UPDATE: Deer Park Station has just been awarded the prestigious 2025 National Landscape Architecture Award for its innovative design and cultural significance. This honor highlights the station’s native gardens, which celebrate the rich history of the area and its ecological integrity.
Built as part of the Mt Derrimut Road level crossing removal in 2023, the station’s forecourt has been recognized for its thoughtful integration into the protected ecological zone, preserving remnant grasslands crucial for local wildlife. The jury praised the project for its strong community engagement and its ability to meet the safety and mobility needs of commuters.
“Integrated cultural references in the design bring an added dimension to the outcome, allowing stories of the place to be shared with commuters,” the award jury stated, emphasizing the project’s commitment to both safety and storytelling.
Designed by Hassell architects in collaboration with local Indigenous Elders, Aunty Gail Smith and Aunty Julieanne Axford, the landscaping reflects the ‘layers of Country’ concept. This narrative recognizes Bunjil, the Great Creator Spirit often depicted as a wedge-tailed eagle, symbolizing the connection to the land and its history.
The station boasts a stunning rooftop garden and features over 50,000 new trees, shrubs, and grasses. Monumental boulders, each weighing between 7-10 tonnes, stand as a testament to Deer Park’s heritage, directing the gaze of visitors toward significant mountains including the You Yangs, Mt Disappointment, and Mt Macedon. These landmarks have served as navigational guides since before colonization and are integral to Indigenous creation stories.
This architectural achievement not only enhances the local landscape but also fosters a deeper connection to the cultural narratives of the region. The recognition from the National Landscape Architecture Awards underscores the importance of integrating environmental stewardship with community identity.
As Deer Park Station continues to serve as a vital transport hub, this award reinforces the significance of preserving cultural heritage within modern infrastructure. Stay tuned for more updates on how this recognition will impact the community and future projects.
