UPDATE: Timber plantation planting has officially launched at Rock House Farm in Kyneton, backed by a significant $94,350 investment from the state government’s Victoria Carbon Farming Program. This urgent initiative aims to support local farmers while addressing environmental challenges, marking a pivotal moment for sustainable agriculture in the region.
Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas heralded the project, stating, “This is such an amazing initiative – supporting our local farmers and communities in practical ways that make a real difference on the ground.” The initial phase of the planting, which recently concluded, covers 10 percent of the total area planned for next year, highlighting the project’s swift progress.
The 19-hectare mixed species timber plantation, developed in collaboration with forestry service provider wood4good, employs a technique known as regenerative forestry. This method is designed to restore land vitality, ensuring the plantation thrives. Over the next 25 years, the project is projected to sequester approximately 7,000 tonnes of carbon, significantly impacting local environmental health.
Farmers participating in this program can diversify their income by cultivating trees for various uses, including shade, erosion control, and timber production. The initiative not only boosts income but also aims to restore water and soil health, enhancing agricultural land productivity.
As the trees mature, Rock House Farm will reap substantial benefits, including improved shade and shelter for livestock, increased biodiversity, and a new revenue stream from harvesting wood products. This development is crucial for farmers seeking sustainable solutions amidst growing environmental concerns.
The ongoing contributions of the Victoria Carbon Farming Program are set to reshape agricultural practices in Victoria, signaling a shift towards more eco-friendly farming methodologies. As the project progresses, more updates are anticipated, keeping the community informed about its positive impacts.
Stay tuned for further developments on this groundbreaking initiative that promises to transform farming practices while contributing to environmental sustainability.
