Kotoni Staggs, the rising star of the Brisbane Broncos, is reflecting on a remarkable year following his commitment to the Australian national team. After participating in all three of the Kangaroos’ Test victories in England, Staggs reunited with former Broncos coach Kevin Walters. His off-season has included a notable appearance at the Queensland PGA Championships pro-am in Brisbane, where he shared his thoughts on an impressive campaign.
“I haven’t really sat down and looked back yet, but it’s been one hell of a year and that’s why you play footy,” the 27-year-old said. Staggs recounted the joy of playing in Brisbane, where the love for the Broncos runs deep. “It’s been amazing. Playing footy in Brisbane, where everybody loves the Broncos and us winning… you walk around and everyone’s congratulating you wherever you go.”
As he reminisced, Staggs expressed his childhood dreams of making the National Rugby League (NRL) and winning a premiership. Despite his achievements, he remains focused on future goals. “Every year I set goals to achieve and that’s one… I want to have that Blues jersey and have it for a while,” he stated, eyeing a spot on the New South Wales state team.
Staggs made his only State of Origin appearance during the 2022 season opener. Unfortunately, his debut was cut short by a shoulder injury, which he played through but ultimately required off-season surgery. Looking ahead, he sees an opportunity to secure his place in the Blues, especially with the recent release of Zac Lomax from his NRL contract to pursue other opportunities.
“I’ve just got to keep playing good footy and time will tell, but that’ll be one thing on my mind, to try to get that Blues jersey,” Staggs noted. His determination and talent are clear as he prepares for the upcoming season, aiming to build on his success and fulfill his aspirations on the field.
With Staggs’ commitment and the winds of change within the NRL, fans eagerly await his next moves as he strives for greatness both with the Broncos and potentially with the Blues.
