three-men-charged-with-murder-following-bega-stabbing-incident

UPDATE: Three men have been charged with murder in connection to a shocking stabbing incident in Bega that left one man dead and another injured. Just announced by the South Coast Police District, the arrests were made early this morning, November 20, 2023, following an extensive investigation.

At approximately 7:30 AM, police executed search warrants at homes in both Bega and nearby Bemboka. The suspects—aged 29, 32, and 34—were taken into custody, with the 32-year-old facing multiple serious charges, including murder and possession of an unauthorized firearm. The other two men were also charged with murder and intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

All three men have been refused bail and are scheduled to appear before the Bail Division Court tomorrow, November 21. In a separate matter, a 19-year-old woman was arrested but remains under police guard in a hospital, where she is being treated for unrelated injuries.

The investigation stems from a tragic incident on October 6, when emergency services responded to reports of a welfare check on East Street in Bega. They found Gordon Kessey, aged 43, fatally wounded in a park. Despite the efforts of NSW Ambulance, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, Benjamin Smith, aged 45, also suffered stab wounds but has since been released from the hospital.

Police have established a crime scene and launched an investigation under Strike Force Nakstone. In the days following the stabbing, detectives seized two vehicles for forensic examination and executed a search warrant at a Bega unit, recovering a knife and electronic devices. Last week, the State Emergency Service assisted in searching Glebe Wetlands, leading to further discoveries that are now under forensic examination.

Detective Acting Inspector Luke Walshe addressed the media earlier today, confirming, “The investigation is still ongoing. We have arrested four people, but we will allege that a number of other people were also involved in that incident.” He indicated that further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward, emphasizing the ongoing nature of this serious investigation. As Strike Force Nakstone remains active, the community is advised to stay vigilant as more developments unfold.

This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
