UPDATE: The Hon. Jackie Jarvis, Minister for Fisheries in Western Australia, has just announced the official dates for the highly anticipated 2025-2026 Roe’s abalone fishing season. Recreational fishers are urged to prepare for one-hour fishing sessions scheduled on four Saturday mornings, commencing at 7 AM and concluding at 8 AM. These sessions will take place between Busselton Jetty and Greenough River Mouth, weather and conditions permitting.
The designated fishing dates are as follows:
– December 13, 2025
– January 10, 2026
– February 7, 2026
– February 21, 2026
This year, the Cook Government has allocated $417,000 to Surf Life Saving WA (SLSWA) to enhance safety measures during these fishing sessions. This funding will support safety patrols and rescue operations in the Perth metropolitan area through to 2028.
Fishers are reminded that while surf lifesavers will monitor safety in metropolitan areas, coastal zones outside of Perth are not covered by SLSWA. Recfishwest will amplify essential safety messages, advising fishers on proper attire, equipment, and ocean condition management to ensure a safe fishing experience.
The Roe’s abalone fishery is one of the most closely regulated in the world, with a total allowable catch determined annually based on comprehensive surveys and environmental assessments. This season, the rules remain unchanged: fishers are permitted a daily limit of 15 Roe’s abalone, with a minimum size requirement of 60 mm. Compliance officers from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development will be actively monitoring catches during each session to safeguard the fishery’s sustainability.
Minister Jarvis expressed the importance of prioritizing safety and sustainability:
“Abalone fishing is incredibly popular in Western Australia, and it’s crucial that safety and sustainability are front-of-mind for recreational fishers. Surf Life Saving WA, lifesavers, and volunteers do a tremendous job monitoring safety at popular abalone fishing locations, and we’re proud to extend the funding agreement for the upcoming abalone seasons,”
said Jarvis.
As excitement builds for the start of the season, fishers are encouraged to stay informed on regulations and weather conditions.
