The 9th Gerontech and Innovation Expo cum Summit (GIES) is currently taking place in Hong Kong from November 20 to 23, 2025, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Co-organized by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government and the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS), this event has become the largest public education platform dedicated to gerontechnology in the region. With free admission, the expo features over 270 exhibitors showcasing nearly 1,000 innovative products aimed at enhancing the quality of life for the elderly.

This year’s event highlights three thematic pavilions that focus on significant areas of elderly care: the applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in care and rehabilitation, bowel and gut health, and the development of care food. Various exhibition zones provide a creative and interactive environment for visitors to explore how technology integrates into daily living, rehabilitation, and caregiving.

The opening ceremony welcomed key figures including Dr. Zhou He, Vice Director of The Department of Social Affairs, and Mr. Bernard Chan, Vice-chairperson of HKCSS. During his address, Chan emphasized that the GIES has become a vital cross-sector event, uniting innovation in aging with social impact. He noted the inclusion of the “General Requirements of Easy-to-eat Food for Older Adults” in the Greater Bay Area Standards list. This initiative marks a significant achievement for HKCSS, as it represents the first industry-led standard within the silver economy, providing essential guidance for market development and regional collaboration.

Another highlight of the summit is the inaugural Silver Summit, which focuses on the evolving silver economy and features discussions on emerging opportunities through gerontechnology. The theme, “Building a Vibrant Gerontech & Silver Economy Ecosystem: Shared Vision for Local, GBA & International Development,” invites experts to share insights and experiences from Hong Kong and beyond.

Terry Wong, CEO of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, remarked on the importance of embracing technology to address demographic challenges. He stated, “Gerontech offers a dual opportunity—addressing societal needs while driving economic growth.” Wong highlighted the expo’s immersive experience zones and R&D showcases, aimed at meeting the real-world demands of elderly individuals and caregivers.

The GIES features several special thematic pavilions, including “AI Driving Smart Ageing Futures,” “Poo Poo X Gut Health,” and “Care Food Wonderland.” In addition, there are booths dedicated to various innovative sectors, such as the Tech Innovation Corridor and Gerontech Testing Ground, along with international exhibitor groups from regions including Mainland China, Northern Europe, Australia, and Japan.

The summit encourages public engagement with a series of talks, live demonstrations, and tastings of care food, making it suitable for older adults, caregivers, families, and the wider community. The event runs daily from 11:00 to 18:00 on November 20, and from 10:00 to 18:00 from November 21 to 23, with last admission half an hour before closing.

The Gerontech and Innovation Expo cum Summit has attracted more than 250,000 visitors since its inception in 2017, reinforcing Hong Kong’s commitment to leveraging technology for the benefit of its aging population. As the expo continues, it aims to foster collaboration and innovation, solidifying Hong Kong’s position as a leader in gerontechnology and shaping a sustainable future for elderly care.
