In a commanding performance, the Brisbane Lions triumphed over the Carlton Blues with a decisive score of 10.7 (67) to 5.2 (32) on March 23, 2024. The victory, witnessed by 6,511 fans at Brighton Homes Arena, secured the Lions a place in their third consecutive AFLW Grand Final, where they will face North Melbourne.

Ruby Svarc delivered a standout performance, scoring four goals, a career high. This achievement came after she had netted only 17 goals in her previous 55 games. Svarc’s remarkable display helped propel the Lions into a dominant third-quarter blitz, where they scored five goals in just 11 minutes.

The Lions’ victory marked their ninth consecutive win, reversing the outcome of their earlier meeting with the Blues in round three. Brisbane’s record in grand finals is impressive, with this upcoming showdown set to be their fourth appearance in a row and seventh in the last decade.

The game began with a slow start for the Lions, who struggled to convert their dominance into points. Despite recording 12 inside-50 entries in the first quarter, they ended the term scoreless. Meanwhile, Carlton capitalized on their opportunities, with Dayne Finn scoring the only goal of the quarter.

As the second quarter unfolded, Brisbane’s frantic energy began to pay off. Svarc opened her account with a well-timed goal after a quick exchange of handballs. She soon added another goal after regathering a smothered shot, showcasing her scoring prowess. The Blues responded with a goal from Poppy Scholz, but the Lions maintained pressure, with Taylor Smith also finding the net.

The first half concluded with a narrow five-point margin, but the Lions quickly turned up the intensity after halftime. Svarc’s third goal, a banana kick from the pocket, sparked the Lions’ surge. Following her assist to Courtney Hodder, who scored to extend Brisbane’s lead, Dakota Davidson added another highlight moment, executing a remarkable goal from a tight angle.

The third quarter saw the floodgates open for Brisbane. Following a free kick against Harriet Cordner, Ellie Hampson capitalized and scored, further widening the gap. Davidson struck again with a powerful kick from 45 meters, bringing the Lions’ total to five goals in a thrilling quarter.

Despite a late effort from Carlton’s Sophie McKay, Hampson quickly responded to maintain Brisbane’s momentum. Svarc capped off her outstanding night by scoring her fourth goal early in the final term, effectively sealing the match.

As the Lions prepare to face North Melbourne next Saturday, they carry forward a remarkable unbeaten streak of 26 games. With the energy of this latest victory still fresh, Brisbane aims to secure another premiership title in the upcoming grand final.
