UPDATE: A motorbike rider in Sydney faces a staggering $660 fine after a reckless decision to take photos on a pedestrian walkway. This incident occurred on Sunday evening, October 15, 2023, around 6 PM at The Connection in Rhodes, a popular walking path along the Parramatta River.

Local authorities are sounding the alarm over unauthorized vehicles on footpaths, which pose serious risks to pedestrian safety. According to Burwood Police, the rider was caught by a passerby mounting the footpath, snapping multiple photos before departing. The police confirmed that the rider received two fines: one for $330 for stopping on the footpath and another $330 for obstructing access.

A police spokesperson stated,

“A scenic photo isn’t worth a $660 fine. Motorcycles are not permitted on shared pedestrian paths. This rider briefly stopped at Rhodes for a snap and copped a penalty for obstructing access and stopping on a path in a built-up area. Please park responsibly and help keep shared spaces accessible to all.”

This incident reflects a growing concern among authorities regarding the increasing use of e-bikes and scooters on footpaths. Just days prior, two children, aged 8 and 15, tragically lost their lives in separate e-bike incidents on the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast, respectively. These alarming events highlight the urgent need for stricter regulations and enforcement regarding unauthorized vehicles in pedestrian zones.

In recent weeks, Queensland has seen a surge in hospitalizations related to e-bike and e-scooter accidents, with seven individuals requiring treatment after a series of crashes. As e-bikes and scooters become more popular, the risks associated with their unauthorized use on footpaths have escalated, raising serious safety concerns for pedestrians.

Authorities are urging the public to respect shared spaces and adhere to local laws to ensure everyone’s safety. The message is clear: capturing the perfect shot on social media isn’t worth the risk of hefty fines or, worse, endangering lives.
