Kia has introduced the EV5 WKNDR concept, showcasing its off-road capabilities at the Guangzhou Motor Show in China. This mid-size electric SUV is the fourth WKNDR concept from the South Korean automaker, following models inspired by the Tasman ute, the EV9 large electric SUV, and the PV5 electric van. The EV5 WKNDR is tailored for adventure enthusiasts, featuring a plethora of rugged enhancements aimed at enhancing its outdoor functionality.
The concept includes robust front and rear bumpers, functional roof rails equipped with tool mounts, and pronounced wheel arches fitted with aggressive 20-inch wheels and mud tyres. Notably, the vehicle has retractable yellow recovery points at both ends and appears to sport a significant suspension lift, suggesting serious off-road potential.
Inside, the adventurous theme continues with bold yellow accents on the octagonal steering wheel, center console, door panels, and newly designed seats. The cabin prominently features eco-friendly BIO PU materials, emphasizing Kia’s commitment to sustainability. Rear seats are designed to fold down or be easily removed, creating a flat loading space equipped with yellow straps and sliding mounts for various outdoor equipment.
Camping enthusiasts will appreciate additional features such as a tailgate that functions as a camp table, ambient camp lighting, a built-in radio, and binoculars. A thoughtful “weekend-away” mode is also included, which automates route planning, suggests charging stops, and identifies points of interest for nature lovers.
While specific details about the EV5 WKNDR’s technical specifications remain undisclosed, it is expected to be based on the flagship all-wheel drive GT-Line variant. This model, priced at $71,770 in Australia before on-road costs, is equipped with dual electric motors that deliver a combined output of 230kW of power and 480Nm of torque, powered by an 88kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. The entry-level 2WD Standard Range variant of the MY26 Kia EV5 lineup starts at $56,770 plus on-road costs, featuring a single motor with outputs of 160kW and 310Nm from a 64kWh LFP battery.
In a notable shift, the EV5 WKNDR is expected to enter production, as confirmed by industry analyst Tycho de Feijter on the social media platform X. The timeline for its production rollout remains unspecified. This exciting development places Kia at the forefront of the electric vehicle market, appealing to consumers seeking both adventure and sustainable transport solutions.
As the automotive industry increasingly shifts towards electrification, Kia’s EV5 WKNDR concept represents a significant step in blending rugged utility with eco-friendly design, catering to a demographic eager for outdoor exploration without compromising on modern technology.
