Tom Trbojevic has been appointed as the new captain of the Manly Sea Eagles, with previous skipper Daly Cherry-Evans offering his congratulations shortly after the announcement. Cherry-Evans, who has transitioned to the Roosters, reached out to Trbojevic, expressing his pride in the young player’s new role.

Trbojevic shared the details of their exchange, stating, “He just said it’s obviously a great honour and there’s nothing better than running out to a packed hill. I look forward to it.” The moment carries both joy and complexity for the Trbojevic family, as Tom’s older brother, Jake Trbojevic, was also in contention for the captaincy. Jake, who has previously filled in when Cherry-Evans was unavailable, may feel a sense of disappointment despite his support for Tom.

“It’s not awkward by any means,” Tom clarified. “He’s really happy for me and happy that I get to do it, and then he gets to be alongside me while I do it.”

This leadership position comes shortly after Tom Trbojevic agreed to a one-year contract extension, despite taking a substantial pay cut of $400,000 to continue with the Sea Eagles. The focus now shifts to improving team performance after a disappointing season that ended without finals football.

Trbojevic, known for his reserved demeanor, has been asked how he plans to motivate his teammates. He humorously remarked, “Dictator,” before explaining that he employs a more direct approach when necessary as a fullback. “I’ll have a laugh and I’m quite easygoing, but some things you need to be quite direct with,” he added.

While Tom’s future as captain appears stable, Jake’s situation raises concerns. He suffered multiple head injuries last season, prompting questions about his long-term viability in the sport. With his contract due to expire at the end of next year, discussions regarding an extension have been postponed until the club can assess his recovery.

“The way he finished last year with his head was a little bit disappointing for him,” Tom acknowledged. “But he feels good, he’s going to obviously put it back into training, see where he’s at.” Jake has yet to decide on his post-career plans, but Tom believes he still has time to make that decision.

As the Sea Eagles prepare for the upcoming season, they face additional uncertainties regarding other key players, including Reuben Garrick and Tolu Koula. Garrick, whose contract extends only through next season, has drawn interest from other clubs, including the Roosters. Koula has a player option that extends to 2027. Tom’s willingness to take a pay cut may facilitate the retention of both players, though it remains unclear whether they will choose to stay with the club.

“I’m not telling anyone to take pay cuts as well,” Trbojevic stated. “They’re both integral players and parts of our team, and we’d love to have them both here.”

The spotlight will also be on Cherry-Evans when the Sea Eagles face the Roosters in round four. Trbojevic commented on the peculiar sight of his former captain in a new jersey, saying, “It just looked weird.” This match is expected to draw significant attention as both teams prepare for a competitive encounter.

With the new season on the horizon, all eyes will be on Tom Trbojevic as he steps into his role as captain, navigating family dynamics while aiming to lead the Sea Eagles back to success.
