instructor-charged-after-alleged-assault-of-three-girls-at-camp

Three 11-year-old girls were allegedly sexually assaulted by a camp instructor during activities at the Wedderburn Christian Campsite in Sydney. The incident involved the instructor, Samuel John Kelly, who is facing multiple charges related to the alleged offences that occurred during a school camp in late October.

On November 2, 2023, detectives from the Child Abuse Squad arrested Kelly, aged 18, and charged him with 13 counts of intentionally sexually touching a child between the ages of 10 and 16. It is alleged that Kelly inappropriately touched the students while checking their harnesses during various activities at the 136-acre campsite in the city’s south-west.

Following his arrest, Kelly appeared in court but did not apply for bail. He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to face Campbelltown Local Court on December 2, 2023. The allegations have prompted significant concern within the local community and among parents of children who attend the camp.

The Wedderburn Christian Campsite confirmed that Kelly’s employment was terminated upon learning of the allegations. The campsite hosts hundreds of public and private schoolchildren annually, providing a range of adventure activities such as rock climbing, abseiling, and tree climbs. While the site has protocols in place for ensuring the safety of children, including screening staff in accordance with the Child Protection (Prohibited Employment) Act 1998, the nature of these allegations raises serious questions about oversight and safeguarding practices.

Images shared on social media by the school attended by the alleged victims indicate that numerous students were present at the campsite during the time of the alleged incidents. The New South Wales Education Department has declined to comment on the situation, citing ongoing investigations.

As the investigation continues, the local community is left grappling with the implications of these allegations. The case highlights the critical importance of maintaining robust child protection measures, particularly in environments where children are engaged in activities away from their homes.

Authorities have urged any additional victims or witnesses to come forward as they seek to uncover the full extent of the situation. The case will likely serve as a focal point for discussions on child safety policies and practices in educational and recreational settings.
