The Denver Broncos have solidified their commitment to key players by finalizing contract extensions for center Luke Wattenberg and defensive tackle Malcolm Roach. Coach Sean Payton has consistently expressed confidence in the team’s roster, and these recent agreements reflect that belief. Wattenberg, a fifth-round pick in the 2022 draft and the starting center for the past two seasons, has signed a four-year extension worth $48 million. Roach, who has recorded 4.5 sacks and 64 tackles during his time with the Broncos, has secured a three-year deal valued at $29.25 million, including $14 million guaranteed.
The announcements follow a busy week for the Broncos, who are currently enjoying a strong season with a record of 9-2 and an impressive eight-game winning streak—their longest since an eleven-game run in 2012. Recently, kicker Wil Lutz also agreed to a three-year contract extension, while wide receiver Courtland Sutton, defensive end Zach Allen, and outside linebacker Nik Bonitto secured multiyear extensions just before the regular season commenced.
Payton indicated that discussions about contracts had been ongoing, particularly during the team’s recent bye week. He emphasized the importance of maintaining team dynamics while negotiating contracts, saying, “The key is not affecting the mojo or how your team’s doing. I’m always sensitive to that, especially when you’re playing well.”
Wattenberg has been recognized by Payton as an “asset starter,” showcasing his reliability on the field since taking over the starting role last season when Lloyd Cushenberry III exited in free agency. Over the past two seasons, Wattenberg has started 24 games, including all 11 games this year.
Despite these extensions, the Broncos still have several potential unrestricted free agents as the season progresses. Linebackers Alex Singleton and Justin Strnad, defensive end John Franklin-Myers, running back J.K. Dobbins, and tight end Adam Trautman all remain on the list of players whose futures with the team are uncertain.
As the Broncos continue their pursuit of a successful season, these contract agreements signify a strong commitment to building a competitive roster. With key players secured, the focus now shifts to maintaining their winning momentum and preparing for the challenges ahead.
