khawaja-confirms-fitness-for-gabba-test-avoids-pain-relief

UPDATE: Usman Khawaja has confirmed he will be fit to play in the upcoming Gabba Test, avoiding pain-killing injections after a challenging start to the Ashes series. The 38-year-old opener revealed his struggles with back spasms, but insists he is ready for action next Thursday.

Speaking at a fundraiser for the Usman Khawaja Foundation, Khawaja detailed how he almost required an epidural to manage his pain. “It was a tough three days,” he stated, reflecting on his inability to open in the first innings during the Ashes opener in Perth. He noted, “I was trying to do everything I could to be on the field for Australia.”

Khawaja’s back issues surfaced dramatically when he struggled to stand after jumping for a high ball at slip. He recalled, “As I landed, I was like, ‘Oh no. Please. You’re good. You’re good, it’s just mind over matter’.” Despite medical warnings, he pushed through, determined to contribute to his team’s efforts.

The Queensland native has been retained in Australia’s unchanged 14-man squad for the second Test, demonstrating his resilience. His performance at the Gabba is critical, as he boasts an impressive average of 59.37 in Sheffield Shield matches over the past four summers.

Khawaja’s injury opened the door for teammate Travis Head, who seized the opportunity by scoring a match-winning century, leading to speculation about a permanent shift in the batting order. However, Khawaja remains focused on his own fitness, stating he has not paid attention to the chatter regarding his position.

“I had radiology booked for the next day,” Khawaja said, emphasizing his commitment to recovery. “I’m really glad we got it done that night.” Despite his back spasms being a new challenge, he expressed optimism, saying, “The last few days, it’s been good.”

With the Gabba Test fast approaching, all eyes will be on Khawaja as he aims to return to form and silence any doubts about his role in the Australian squad. As the series unfolds, his experience and performance will be pivotal for the team’s success against England.

Stay tuned for further updates on Khawaja’s condition and the upcoming Test match, which promises to be a thrilling contest.
