URGENT UPDATE: The Albanese government has just announced a significant funding boost of $10 million for over 200 wineries and cellar doors across Australia, just weeks before Christmas. This financial injection comes as part of the seventh round of the Wine Tourism and Cellar Door Grants program, aimed at enhancing venues from South Australia’s Barossa Valley to Western Australia’s Margaret River.
Why this matters NOW: With the holiday season approaching, these grants are expected to bolster the Australian wine industry, which is valued at a staggering $51.3 billion. This funding will assist wine and cider makers in upgrading their facilities, hiring additional staff, and diversifying offerings to attract a greater number of visitors. Agriculture Minister Julie Collins emphasized the urgency of this initiative, stating, “There is no better time to offer this cash injection.”
Tourism data revealed that more than seven million tourists, both domestic and international, visited wineries across Australia last year. Collins highlighted the economic impact, noting, “These grants help winemakers and cellar doors make the most of these opportunities and add value to their businesses.”
The funding, delivered through Wine Australia, supports an industry that currently sustains over 200,000 jobs, particularly through tourism. Among the recipients of this funding, 104 venues are located in South Australia, including 22 in the Barossa Valley. Other beneficiaries include 45 venues in Western Australia, 46 in Victoria, 37 in New South Wales, 14 in Tasmania, and one each in Queensland and the ACT.
Collins urged Australians to embrace the beautiful summer weather and support local winemakers during this festive season. The government first opened applications for the Wine Tourism and Cellar Door Grants program in 2019 under the previous Coalition government, but the current Labor administration has since announced an additional $30 million in funding over the next three years.
As the holiday season approaches, the wine industry is poised for a surge in activity, and these grants are set to enhance the experiences offered at wineries nationwide. Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.
