lnp-secures-historic-by-election-win-in-hinchinbrook-major-swing

UPDATE: In a groundbreaking shift, Queensland’s LNP has claimed victory in the Hinchinbrook by-election, marking the first time in nearly three decades that a state government has successfully reclaimed a seat during a by-election. This significant win, announced earlier today, is a strong endorsement for Premier David Crisafulli, whose friend and candidate Wayde Chiesa has overturned a previously secure seat held by Katter’s Australian Party (KAP).

The preliminary count from the Queensland Electoral Commission shows the LNP secured an impressive 41.28 percent of the primary vote, leading to a projected 54-46 percent victory margin over KAP’s Mark Molachino. This remarkable outcome comes on the heels of a dramatic 13 percent swing towards the LNP, reflecting a significant shift in voter sentiment in north Queensland.

“This win is historic; it’s been almost 30 years since a government has won back a seat at a by-election,” Premier Crisafulli stated during the announcement. He emphasized the importance of humility and grace in the face of such a significant victory. The LNP’s success is particularly striking given that traditionally, by-elections tend to favor the opposition.

Adding to the competitive atmosphere, One Nation’s Luke Sleep garnered just over 13 percent of the primary vote, while Labor’s Maurie Soars fell significantly behind with only 8 percent. Crisafulli took a moment to highlight the Labor Party’s struggles, noting, “I’m not sure I’ve seen a Labor party vote in single digits, so that’s something for them to reflect on.”

The Hinchinbrook electorate, which spans approximately 6,500 square kilometers, holds personal significance for Crisafulli, who grew up in the area. “This community means a lot to me,” he expressed, underscoring his emotional connection to the region where his family has deep roots.

This pivotal by-election was necessitated by the resignation of former KAP representative Nick Dametto, who recently won the Townsville Mayoral election. The LNP’s victory is seen as a continuation of Crisafulli’s momentum, following his successful campaign in the 2024 state election, which focused heavily on youth crime reforms and marked a decisive end to Labor’s nine-year tenure.

Looking forward, the LNP aims to capitalize on this momentum as they prepare for future electoral challenges. With this win, Crisafulli and his team are poised to strengthen their presence in the region and address the pressing needs of their constituents.

As developments unfold, all eyes will be on how the LNP harnesses this significant victory and the impact it may have on the broader political landscape in Queensland. Stay tuned for further updates on this evolving story.
