UPDATE: Point Cook Centrals triumphed over Melton South Royals in a thrilling match on July 15, 2023, despite challenging weather conditions and injuries. The Sharks showcased their resilience by claiming victory in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s Roy Picone Shield, marking their third win of the season.
The match faced interruptions as rain forced players on and off the field throughout the day. Brett Talbot, a key player for the Sharks, expressed frustration over the weather, stating, “It was quite annoying as we were on and off the field all day.” Entering the second day of play with a 42-run lead, the Sharks aimed to solidify their advantage after bowling the Royals out for just 85 runs.
The Sharks resumed at 6-127, with the intention to bat for just a few overs before unleashing their bowlers. Talbot noted, “We felt like that was enough but we lost overs with everyone coming on and off.” Unfortunately, the Sharks faced setbacks with injuries; skipper Owen Doolan had to retire early due to a hamstring injury, while wicketkeeper James Garnham sustained a dislocated shoulder in a midweek T20 match.
Despite these challenges, the Sharks finished their innings at 9-143, with Garnham top-scoring with 39 runs. The Sharks bowlers quickly put pressure on the Royals, reducing them to 5-44 at one point. However, the Royals showed determination and ended the day at 5-50, avoiding an outright loss. Talbot acknowledged their fight, stating, “They were stubborn… There were a couple of close LBWs which weren’t in our favour, that is cricket.”
In a standout performance, Mitchell Waugh was the only multiple wicket-taker for the Sharks, claiming two wickets. Talbot expressed relief at returning to the winners’ list after two previous losses, emphasizing, “We were able to get a good result and to get a convincing win which was nice.” He also hinted at reinforcements for the team in the coming week, boosting their chances for upcoming matches.
Looking ahead, the Sharks will face East Keilor in a weekend clash, where Talbot believes they have the potential to compete strongly against any team. “On our day, we can take it up to any team, and we have to be switched on,” he affirmed.
In other league news, in the Clark Shield, Bellbridge fell to Pascoe Vale Central, being bowled out for 173 while Pascoe Vale secured a total of 5-174. Meanwhile, Werribee Centrals did not get to play against Sunshine YCW, and in the Russell Pollock Shield, Wyndham Vale’s hopes of a first win ended in a draw after making 256 runs on day one, with the Jaguars at 7-152 when play concluded.
