UPDATE: Perth is set to sizzle with a potential record temperature of 37°C on December 1, 2023, marking the hottest start to summer on record. The last time temperatures soared this high on this date was in 1979, when the mercury reached 37.4°C. The Bureau of Meteorology warns that any temperature above this will break records dating back to 1876.

Residents are already feeling the heat, with temperatures hitting a sweltering 34°C on Sunday, prompting families to flock to local attractions like Elizabeth Quay’s Water Park to cool off. For families such as the Truongs, the fountains provided a much-needed escape from the rising temperatures. “You can have food, ice cream, and a splash in the water for the kids and adults if you’re brave,” said local mother Sabina Smirko, adding that the area offers beautiful views and a vibrant social scene.

The intense heat isn’t just a minor inconvenience. Premier Roger Cook has issued urgent warnings for residents to take precautions against dehydration and sunburn. “The sun will get you, it is hot, and if it doesn’t burn you it will dehydrate you significantly,” he cautioned, particularly advising those near the coast to exercise caution due to potentially dangerous conditions in open waters.

The extreme heat is due to a hot, dry air mass being pushed toward the coast by east to northeasterly winds. The Bureau of Meteorology stated that while temperatures will peak on Monday, some relief is expected starting Tuesday, with readings settling in the mid to high 20s°C for the remainder of the week. However, the usual sea breeze may not provide the expected cooling effect, as it will be light and slow to reach inland areas.

Tomorrow’s forecast is already prompting residents to adjust their plans. As the Truong family prepares for the scorching day ahead, they plan to enjoy the beaches that Perth is renowned for. “We’re just so lucky to have the amazing beaches we do — they’re so accessible and right at our doorstep,” Smirko added, noting that they will make the most of the summer heat, despite it being an adjustment after winter.

Perth’s weather on Monday is expected to be sunny with a maximum of 37°C and a low of 21°C. The forecast for the rest of the week indicates a gradual cooldown, with highs of 29°C on Tuesday and 26°C on Thursday.

As the city prepares for what could be a historic day, residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during peak hours, and look out for one another. The eyes of the nation are on Perth as it braces for a summer that promises to start with a bang.
