wa-government-seeks-community-input-for-2029-bicentenary-planning

The Government of Western Australia is inviting expressions of interest from community organizations to participate in the WA 2029 Bicentenary Planning Advisory Group. This initiative aims to prepare for the bicentenary celebration, which will commemorate the establishment of the Swan River Colony in 1829. The milestone presents an opportunity to reflect on the rich history of Western Australia, honour the diversity of its communities, and promote a future rooted in truth-telling, reconciliation, and unity.

The WA 2029 Bicentenary Planning Advisory Group will be instrumental in shaping the themes and approaches for this significant event. The group is tasked with ensuring that a variety of voices and communities are represented throughout the planning process. The government particularly encourages organizations with extensive community outreach, strong cultural governance, and experience in inclusive engagement. This includes those with ties to regional, remote, First Nations, and multicultural communities.

Successful applicants will be awarded a grant to facilitate large-scale stakeholder engagement across Western Australia during 2026. Their role will also involve providing recommendations to the State Government regarding the themes and approaches for the bicentenary celebrations.

Premier Roger Cook emphasized the importance of community involvement in this historic occasion. He stated, “The 2029 Bicentenary is a unique opportunity for all Western Australians to reflect on our shared history and celebrate the diversity that makes our State so vibrant.” Cook further noted that community partners are in a prime position to guide this milestone and shape an event that is both respectful and inclusive from the very beginning.

“This is more than a celebration; it’s a chance to shape the legacy we leave for generations to come,” Cook added. He expressed enthusiasm about the ideas and energy that community partners will contribute to the planning process.

Organizations interested in participating can find more information about the expressions of interest and the application process by visiting the official government website at www.wa.gov.au/bicentenary-planning. The deadline for submissions has not yet been specified, but interested parties are encouraged to act promptly to ensure their voices are heard in this pivotal planning effort.
